Instagram DMs in the inbox your team already uses

Yes — PingPlug connects Instagram direct messages through Meta’s official messaging API, so DMs land in the same shared inbox as WhatsApp and Messenger. It needs a professional Instagram account linked to a Facebook Page, which is Meta’s requirement rather than ours.

How it connects

You connect the Facebook Page that your Instagram account is linked to. Meta sends message events to PingPlug’s webhook, and replies are sent back through the Graph API using the Page’s access token.

What you get

DMs in the shared inbox

Labelled by channel, assignable to an agent, and answerable without opening the Instagram app.

Comment replies too

A comment on a post can trigger an automatic direct message, with keyword rules so it fires on the right ones.

The chatbot works here

If you have set up the AI chatbot, it answers Instagram DMs. This is one of the channels it does answer on — WhatsApp is not, so a bot you rely on here will not pick up a WhatsApp message.

One contact record

Notes and tags live on the contact, so context follows the person rather than the app.

What this is not

  • A personal Instagram account will not work. Meta requires a professional (business or creator) account linked to a Facebook Page.
  • Meta applies its own reply window on Instagram, in the same spirit as the WhatsApp 24-hour rule.
  • Story replies and mentions are not handled as separate features.
  • Connecting needs admin rights on the Facebook Page. If an agency holds the Page, they have to do this part.

Setting it up

  1. 1

Make sure the Instagram account is professional and linked to a Facebook Page.

  2. 2

    Connect that Page in PingPlug.

  3. 3

Grant the messaging permissions Meta asks for.

  4. 4

DMs start arriving in the shared inbox.

Questions

Do I need a Facebook Page for this?

Yes. Instagram messaging through the API runs through a linked Facebook Page. Every tool built on Meta’s official API has this requirement.

Is this a bot logged into my Instagram?

No. It uses Meta’s official messaging API. Nothing depends on staying signed in to a session, and nothing is doing anything Meta has not sanctioned.

Can I message someone who commented but never DMed me?

Within the window Meta allows after their comment, yes — that is what the comment-to-DM rules do. Outside it, no, and no tool can.
