What is the difference between the WhatsApp Business app and the API?
The WhatsApp Business app is a free phone app for one person managing one number. The Cloud API is an interface other software connects to, so a team can share one number, automate replies and message at scale. The app has an interface; the API does not — you use it through a platform.
What the API gives you
Several people answering one number at once, each with their own login.
Automation: replies triggered by events rather than typed by hand.
Broadcasting to a real list with per-recipient delivery and read reporting, rather than the app's limited broadcast lists.
Integration — conversations alongside your CRM, forms and campaigns instead of stranded on a handset.
What you give up
The number cannot be used in the WhatsApp Business app at the same time. Connecting it to the API takes it off the phone.
Business-initiated messages need approved templates, where the app let you type anything to anyone.
It is not free. Meta charges for messaging, separately from whatever platform you use.
Which one you need
One person, modest volume, no automation — the app is genuinely fine, and switching costs you money and flexibility you were not using.
More than one person needing to answer, or messaging more people than you can type to — that is what the API is for, and the point at which the app stops being viable.
PingPlug is one of the platforms you would use the Cloud API through. The choice of whether you need the API at all comes first, and for a single-operator business the honest answer is often no.
